- Cardiovascular Research Center (CRC)
is the most completely developed component of Sanford Research/USD with what is considered to be the nations largest single team of research scientists studying cell remodeling and heart failure. Key research areas include diabetes, cardiac disease mutations, thyroid disorders, neuro-hormonal abnormalities and vascular growth regulation. With seven principal investigators led by Martin Gerdes, PhD, and a staff of over 40, the CRC is attracting significant NIH and other related funding.
Signal Transduction Research Center is headed by M. Benjamin Perryman, PhD, who is nationally recognized for research in pediatric hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Current disease under study include: cancer, myocardial infarction, diabetes, stroke, obesity, Alzheimers, COPD.
Metabolic and Nutrition Research Center was recently developed by William Harris, PhD. Dr. Harris is an international expert on the effect of the Omega-3 complex on cardiovascular and other diseases currently involved in an extended leg of the Framingham Heart Study.
Disparities Research Center recognizes that major health issues are associated with disparities, Sanford Research/USD has established a center for health disparities enabling Sanford Research/USD to focus on research and the population medicine related to these factors. This multi campus center and relationships involves various patient populations. Amy Elliott, PhD and Kathy Langwell, MA, are co-directors.
Cancer Biology Research Center features a full research program including womens health involving breast and cervical cancer and other cancer sites under the leadership of Keith Miskimins, PhD., Maria Bell, MD and John Lee, MD. Research teams are working on projects in cellular, molecular, and genetic properties of breast, ovarian cervical, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancer.
Sanford Childrens Health Research Center developed under the guidance of H. Eugene Hoyme, MD, Chief Pediatric Medical office and Chair of Pediatrics for the Sanford School of Medicine The University of South Dakota. A unique partnership is in place with the Burnham Medical Research Institute (La Jolla, CA) as well as national and international research relationships through Sanford Childrens Hospital with key focus areas including diabetes, genomics, fetal alcohol syndrome, and perinatal cardiology.
Womens Health Research Center, a multidisciplinary research center including studies in human papillomavirus (HPV), endometriosis, preeclampsia, fertility, and urology, under the direction of Keith Hanson, MD, chair OB/GYN, Sanford School of Medicine The University of South Dakota.
